Product Description
Component-Based Software Engineering is considered one solution for the problem of growing complexity and size of modern software systems. Applications are not built in a monolithic fashion from scratch, but are rather assembled from components; that is, pre-constructed units of software. The properties of such software components must be specified explicitly. This has been well understood for functional properties, but non-functional properties are still an area of ongoing research. In particular, generic approaches that use the same formalism for arbitrary non-functional properties and thus reduce the cognitive load for application developers are still not sufficiently understood. The book introduces a formal framework for a generic approach for specifying non-functional properties of component-based systems. The framework is then applied to defining the semantics of a specification language and to specifying analysis methods for specific non-functional properties. The book comes with an extensive appendix of a number of sample specifications for concrete properties and applications. It targets researchers and software engineers interested in CBSE and non-functional properties.

Product Description
This Ph.D. dissertation presents a framework design, analysis and implementation of embedded systems. A model of timed automata with extended asynchronous processes is adopted, i.e. tasks triggered by events. A task is an executable program characterized by its worst-case execution time and deadline, and possibly other parameters such as priorities etc, for scheduling. The main idea is to associate each location of an automaton with a task (or a set of tasks). A transition leading to a location denotes an event triggering the tasks and the clock constraint on the transition specifies the possible arrival times of the event. This yields a model for real-time systems expressive enough to describe concurrency and synchronization, and tasks with (or without) preemptive and (or) non-preemptive. It is believed that the model may serve as a bridge between scheduling theory and automata-theoretic approaches to system modeling and analysis.

The thesis’ aim is to develop a generic device driver concept for handling NOR flash memory devices in an embedded cellular phone system. This concept describes the process of designing, implementing as well as testing the software on the Philips Nexperia Cellular System Solution platform. An overview of the current flash market, today’s and future meaning of NOR flash memory as well as the Nexperia environment, serves as an introduction into this area of expertise.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A372803. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis demonstrates the application of design theory as it relates to the generic LAN for the Naval Academy of the ROC (ROCNA). The first part of the study covers a theory dealing with system analysis and design, network technology and data communication. This is used for a foundation for the development of a end-user survey and feasibility study for the ROCNA LAN. Chapter III of this study is a background of the ROCNA and an analysis of the Naval Academy’s network requirements. In Chapter IV a generic LAN is developed to meet the ROCNAs requirements and different alternative designs are investigated. A cost-benefit analysis is performed to select between the design alternatives. The design selected uses a point to point connection dual ring backbone and a 10BaseT star topology for subnetworks. Finally, recommendations and conclusions are presented in Chapter V for more emphasis on information technology education in the ROC Armed Forces and specifically at the ROCNA.
